Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Iori & Imabari Towels
What is Iori?
Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Ehime, Japan, IORI is a premier specialty brand dedicated to the art of the Imabari towel. We are located at the heart of Japan's most celebrated towel-making region, where the abundance of soft, mineral-free water has fueled a 120-year textile tradition.
With over 10 million towels sold, IORI is a household name in Japan, trusted for our wide selection of authentic Imabari-certified products. We bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary life, ensuring that every towel meets the rigorous standards for softness, safety, and absorbency.
At IORI, we don't just sell towels; we preserve a heritage of Monozukuri (the Japanese art of making things) to bring a touch of comfort to your everyday routine.
What are Imabari Towels?
Imabari Towels are a symbol of Japanese quality, produced in Imabari, Ehime—a region with over 120 years of towel-making history.
Every authentic towel is identified by the official red, white, and blue tag, which includes a unique certification ID number. To earn this tag, towels must pass a rigorous12-point inspectionmeasuring softness, durability, and colorfastness.
The most famous of these is the"5-second rule,"which requires a towel to sink within five seconds in water to ensure high absorbency.
Why are Imabari towels special?
Imabari towels are special because they are produced under industry-wide quality standards, not just individual brand claims.
To be recognized as Imabari towels, products must meet criteria established by the Imabari Towel Industrial Association, ensuring absorbency, comfort, and suitability for everyday use.
What quality standards must Imabari towels meet?
Imabari towels must pass a set of 12 quality criteria defined by the Imabari Towel Industrial Association.
These standards evaluate absorbency, material performance, and construction quality. Only towels that meet all required criteria are recognized as authentic Imabari towels.
What is the Imabari “5-second rule”?
The Imabari 5-second rule is a test used to evaluate towel absorbency.
In this test, a towel must begin absorbing water within five seconds when placed on the surface of water, without external pressure. This test reflects Imabari’s emphasis on natural, gentle absorbency.
How can I identify an authentic Imabari towel?
Authentic Imabari towels are identified by a red, white, and blue tag issued by the Imabari Towel Industrial Association.
Each tag includes a certification number that corresponds to a registered product and manufacturer, which can be checked on the association’s official website to confirm authenticity.

Shipping from Japan
Where do you ship from?
Every order is carefully prepared and shipped from our shop in Ehime Prefecture, Japan, the home of Imabari towel craftsmanship.
How long does shipping take?
Orders are normally prepared and dispatched within 1–3 business days.
International delivery generally takes approximately 4–10 business days after dispatch, depending on the destination. Customs inspections, local delivery conditions, weather, and carrier disruptions may cause delays.
Which shipping carriers do you use?
Orders to the United States are shipped by Japan Post EMS using a duty-prepaid service.
For other destinations, we generally use Japan Post EMS or Yamato International, depending on the destination and current service availability. The available shipping method will be displayed at checkout.
How are shipping fees calculated?
Shipping charges are calculated at checkout based on your destination and the estimated packed weight of your order.
The shipping charge will be displayed after you enter your delivery address. IORI does not add a separate handling surcharge to the shipping fee shown at checkout.
Will I receive tracking information?
Yes. Once your order has been dispatched, we will email you a tracking number or tracking link so you can follow its journey.
Tracking updates are provided by the carrier and may not appear immediately while the package is moving between countries.
Customs, Duties & Taxes
Will I need to pay customs duties or taxes?
International shipments may be subject to import duties, VAT, taxes, customs clearance charges, or similar fees. The requirements depend on the destination country, the contents of the order, and its value.
How these charges are handled differs between US orders and orders sent to other destinations.
Are duties and taxes included at checkout?
For orders shipped to the United States, applicable import duties and related charges are calculated and collected at checkout. Your order is then shipped by Japan Post EMS using a duty-prepaid service, so you should not normally be asked to pay the same duties again upon delivery.
If you receive an unexpected payment request for a US order, please contact us before paying it.
For other international destinations, duties and taxes are not included unless checkout specifically states otherwise. Any applicable charges are determined by the destination country and must be paid by the recipient.
Customs authorities retain final authority over import assessments and may request additional information or make adjustments.
What value will appear on the customs documents?
Customs documents will show the actual amount paid for the merchandise after any applicable discounts.
We cannot declare an order at a lower value or mark a commercial order as a gift.
What happens if I refuse to pay customs duties?
This applies to charges that were not collected at checkout.
If a shipment is refused or left unclaimed, it may be returned to our shop in Japan. Any eligible refund will be processed after the package has been returned and inspected.
The original shipping charge is not refundable. Actual return shipping and other non-recoverable costs may also be deducted from the merchandise refund. Please see our Return and Refund Policy for details.
To avoid a returned shipment, please monitor your tracking information and respond promptly to any delivery or customs notifications.
Returns & Refunds
Do you accept change-of-mind returns?
Because orders are shipped internationally from Japan, we are generally unable to accept returns or exchanges due to a change of mind, personal preference, or selection of the wrong product, size, or color.
This does not affect any return or cancellation rights that cannot be excluded under applicable consumer protection laws. Please review our Return and Refund Policy for details.
What if my item arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect?
Please contact us as soon as possible—preferably within 7 days of delivery—and include:
- Your order number
- A description of the issue
- Clear photographs of the item and shipping package
After reviewing the information, we will provide an appropriate solution, such as a replacement or refund. If a return is required, IORI will cover the reasonable return shipping cost.
How do I request a return?
Please contact us through our website’s contact form or by email at iori.global@i-ori.jp before returning anything.
If your return is eligible, we will provide instructions. Items returned without prior approval may not be accepted.
When will I receive my refund?
When an item must be returned, the refund will normally be processed after it arrives at our shop in Ehime and has been inspected.
Approved refunds are generally issued to the original payment method within 3–5 business days. Your bank or payment provider may require additional time to display the refund.
The amount refunded will depend on the reason for the return and any non-recoverable shipping, customs, or transaction costs. Please see our Return and Refund Policy for full details.
