Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Iori & Imabari Towels

What is Iori?

Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Ehime, Japan, IORI is a premier specialty brand dedicated to the art of the Imabari towel. We are located at the heart of Japan's most celebrated towel-making region, where the abundance of soft, mineral-free water has fueled a 120-year textile tradition.

With over 10 million towels sold, IORI is a household name in Japan, trusted for our wide selection of authentic Imabari-certified products. We bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary life, ensuring that every towel meets the rigorous standards for softness, safety, and absorbency.

At IORI, we don't just sell towels; we preserve a heritage of Monozukuri (the Japanese art of making things) to bring a touch of comfort to your everyday routine.

What are Imabari Towels?

Imabari Towels are a symbol of Japanese quality, produced in Imabari, Ehime—a region with over 120 years of towel-making history.

Every authentic towel is identified by the official red, white, and blue tag, which includes a unique certification ID number. To earn this tag, towels must pass a rigorous12-point inspectionmeasuring softness, durability, and colorfastness.

The most famous of these is the"5-second rule,"which requires a towel to sink within five seconds in water to ensure high absorbency.

Why are Imabari towels special?

Imabari towels are special because they are produced under industry-wide quality standards, not just individual brand claims.

To be recognized as Imabari towels, products must meet criteria established by the Imabari Towel Industrial Association, ensuring absorbency, comfort, and suitability for everyday use.

What quality standards must Imabari towels meet?

Imabari towels must pass a set of 12 quality criteria defined by the Imabari Towel Industrial Association.

These standards evaluate absorbency, material performance, and construction quality. Only towels that meet all required criteria are recognized as authentic Imabari towels.

What is the Imabari “5-second rule”?

The Imabari 5-second rule is a test used to evaluate towel absorbency.

In this test, a towel must begin absorbing water within five seconds when placed on the surface of water, without external pressure. This test reflects Imabari’s emphasis on natural, gentle absorbency.

How can I identify an authentic Imabari towel?

Authentic Imabari towels are identified by a red, white, and blue tag issued by the Imabari Towel Industrial Association.

Each tag includes a certification number that corresponds to a registered product and manufacturer, which can be checked on the association’s official website to confirm authenticity.

Shipping from Japan

Where do you ship from?

All orders are shipped from Ehime Prefecture, Japan, where our towels are made.

How long does shipping take?

Orders are typically processed and shipped within 3 business days.

Estimated delivery times vary by destination, but most international orders arrive within 3–10 business days after dispatch.

Please note that delivery times may vary due to customs procedures or local courier operations.

Which shipping carriers do you use?

We ship internationally using Japan Post EMS (Express Mail Service) and Yamato international shipping, depending on destination and service availability.

Will I receive tracking information?

Yes. Once your order has been dispatched, we will email you a tracking number and you will receive updates so you can follow your shipment to its destination.

Customs, Duties & Taxes

Will I need to pay customs duties or taxes?

As of 2026, most international shipments are subject to import duties, VAT, or local taxes regardless of the order value. These charges are determined by your local government's customs office.

Because our towels are shipped directly from Ehime, Japan, they are classified as international imports. You will typically be contacted by the courier (Japan Post, DHL, or Yamato) to settle these fees before the package is released for final delivery.

Why aren’t duties included at checkout?

To keep our pricing fair and transparent for customers in over 100 different countries, we do not bundle estimated taxes into our product prices. Every country has unique and frequently changing tax rates; by not pre-collecting these fees, we ensure you are only charged the exact amount required by your specific local government, rather than a padded estimate.

Please note that IORI provides the necessary export documentation, but the final tax assessment is made by your local authorities upon arrival.

What happens if I refuse to pay customs duties or taxes?

If a shipment is refused or unclaimed due to unpaid duties, it will be returned to our shop in Japan. Because international shipping and return costs are non-recoverable, this will result in a Net Refund.

This means the original shipping fee, the return shipping fee, and any non-refundable transaction fees will be deducted from your refund.

We strongly recommend tracking your package closely and settling any customs notifications promptly to avoid these additional costs.

Returns & Refunds

Can I return an item?

Yes. You may request a return within 14 days of delivery, provided the item is unused, unwashed, and in its original packaging.

However, please note that return shipping costs and any associated customs fees are the responsibility of the customer.

For full details, please review our Return and Refund Policy page.

How do I request a return?

To request a return, please contact us via our website’s contact form or by email at iori.global@i-ori.jp within 14 days of delivery.

Approved refunds will be issued to the original payment method within 3 business days.

Original shipping fees, customs duties, and any other service fees are non-refundable.

What if my item arrives damaged or incorrect?
